Tinder is shaking up the online dating scene with a new feature designed for social butterflies: Double Dates.
The update, now rolling out globally, lets users pair up with a friend and match with another duo, adding a group dynamic to what is traditionally been a one-on-one experience.
The move marks Tinder’s latest attempt to make dating feel safer, more social, and less awkward, particularly for younger users who increasingly prefer group-oriented socializing.
“We know dating is more fun, and often more comfortable, when friends are involved,” said Mark Van Ryswyk, Tinder’s Chief Product Officer.
“Double Dates makes it easier to break the ice, stay safe, and turn first dates into group hangs.”
How It Works
Users can invite a mutual match to “link up” profiles with a friend, creating a temporary duo profile.
Once linked, the two can swipe on other pairs, chat in a shared group thread, and even plan a meetup, all within the Tinder app.
The feature draws inspiration from organic trends already happening offline, where friends often accompany each other on early-stage dates or help screen matches.
Safety and Social Play
Tinder says Double Dates isn't just about fun, it is also about comfort and safety.
By going on a date with a trusted friend, users may feel more at ease, particularly in initial meetups. It could also serve as a social buffer against ghosting or awkward silences.
The feature appears to target Gen Z users, a demographic increasingly drawn to shared, casual experiences over traditional dating rituals.
It also builds on other community-focused tools Tinder has been testing, like group video chats and IRL friend-match events.
Whether it becomes the new normal or just a novelty, Double Dates is the latest sign that online dating apps are evolving beyond swiping, and leaning into friendship, fun, and flexibility.
